Drive your career



Driving your career is your job and the road to success is not comfortable by any means. As a career and life coach, I've met many people who've said, "I've been in this job forever and all I see is other people getting the opportunities". The first two questions that come to mind is why the hell have you been in this job forever and where do you think the "other" people are getting the opportunities from?

I believe there is a point and time at which people become complacent and stop going for what they want. They lose their drive and live their life day to day waiting for a miracle. When and why it happens is not always clear but lack of drive is usually demonstrated by lack of energy or willpower.

Luck is a factor in success but one can't depend on it. The truth of the matter is that those shoulder-taps, where someone identifies you as the "perfect fit" and offers you the job on the spot are quite rare. In most cases, people find a job they like, apply for it, and if they're screened in as a good fit, they go for an interview. If they do well in the interview, they get the job. It's a process, sometimes a long one but is usually worth it in the end.

Losing your drive does not have to be permanent. You can get it back. There things you can do to boost your drive and get you further down the road of success.

Ongoing self-evaluation

I believe ongoing self-evaluation is significant to building your drive and motivation. You have to ask yourself why you're not motivated. Remember, you can't be successful if your not driven to succeed. No motion means no promotion.

A good strategy is to make a list of the things you have to do. From that list decide what things you prefer or like doing. Them you need to figure out if you're a person that likes to eat the icing first, then the cake or vice versa. Some people feel motivated when they do what they prefer to do first and some rather save the things they like doing as the reward. If you're like me, you like to get the "crappy" tasks out of the way first and save the more favorable tasks for the end.

It's okay to feel lazy or to feel a little less motivated but there better be a time limit on this phase if you want to be successful in achieving your goals. Get up, dust yourself off, and start moving forward.



Set goals

Setting goals gives you something to work towards and something to look forward to. Life becomes interesting when you have goals, especially when you stick to them. Hit your goals and the sense of achievement that you'll feel will motivate you to achieve more goals.  Achieving your goals confirms that you have the ability to do anything you put your mind to.

Do what you enjoy doing

I believe that the ideal career is the one where you do what you love to do. But the reality for most of us is that we're going to have to do the job that keeps the roof over our head and food in our mouths. So, I tell people the key to your career is to work to live, not live to work. For example, there are many people I know working an office job that they kind of like doing but not love. However, after work they do the things they love doing. They are coaches, they blog, travel, play on co-ed teams, make jewelry, and some are even circus members. They work to enjoy the life they live after work.

As long as your day job pays you what it should and gives you a sense of belonging, use it to enjoy your life. Your job does not have to be where your passion lies but it can help you live out your passion.



Be brave

This is when you have to tell yourself that you just don't have any time to be scared. Fear will make you irrational. When you're irrational, you won't be able to think clearly. Being scared or nervous is a decision you make right before you have to do something uncomfortable. There's a moment when you literally tell yourself, "I'm nervous". That's when your armpits and palms start sweating, you feel like you're going to be sick, and you wish you could run away. You have to stop it before it starts. This is when I tell myself that I'm not nervous and make myself believe it.

I tell myself that I know I'm prepared and I've practiced. Lack of preparation and practice results in failure. For, example, if you have to do a presentation, practice and prepare until you know your stuff. Then you can walk in to a room and tell yourself, I'm ready to tell these people what they need to know. I'm about to show them.

You need drive to be successful. To stay driven and motivated, you should make the effort to get to know yourself.  Setting goals will help you stay focused on what you need to do. Face your fears, go against your norm and take chances. And remember, do what works for YOU!
